Supporting the Child’s Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
SEL At School
"We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.”

SEL At Home
“Families are children’s first teachers and essential to promoting social and emotional learning (SEL) throughout a child’s life. When educators and families work together, they can build strong connections with each other that reinforce social and emotional skills developed in the home, in schools, and in their communities.
Through supportive relationships and home environments, families model and practice SEL with their children. As experts in their children’s development, interests, cultures, and strengths, families are also important advocates for SEL at their child’s school. Families and caregivers can also be critical partners in shaping SEL implementation in schools.”

Why SEL
Academic learning happens best when students feel secure and competent. SEL is how children learn to feel safe and competent at TCGIS.
Through SEL our students grow skills on how to be a part of the TCGIS school community which helps them to develop a sense of belonging. A child’s experience at school will be more positive and the brain can focus better on academic success when they know how to navigate school, their own wellbeing, relationships and learning. Any settings in our society have certain expectations in order for everyone to feel well and that they belong. Children learn how to be in their families first, the first and smallest community they start with. Now we are helping them to learn to do school. At TCGIS they have an opportunity to grow their skills into becoming a active responsible participant in creating a kind, safe empathic, curious, and respectful community and learning environment. We are committed to helping all students do their best at learning together to fulfill our vision of Educating multilingual world citizens who listen to others, see others, and think and act with an open mind. A benefit of SEL is also that it is supporting overall mental health. The family continues to play a vital role in a child’s social emotional development and we partner with you in your child’s learning journey. |
The Art of Emotional Regulation
Is your child having temper tantrums, high emotions, melt downs, withdraws, upset, shots down? This is very normal. Your child is just developing the skills to understand and navigate emotions. Your child is learning how to regulate emotions from adults around them and through the relationship with trusted adults. Parents and caregivers will play an important role in a child’s social emotional learning. Watch the video bellow how you can foster a healthy emotional regulation development. ES (K-5) MS (6-8) |
