New to German

Students coming into kindergarten or first grade do not need to already understand or speak German. TCGIS offers extra German support to students starting in the second grade, all the way up to 8th grade.

This extra support, called DaF (Deutsch als Fremdsprache), or German as a foreign language, offers:
  • Small group instruction in 20-minute increments two to four times a week.
  • Curriculum tailored to each individual group, depending on the classroom curriculum and the students' needs.
Once a student in the DaF program has achieved German proficiency, they are able to exit the program.

We also encourage incoming students in grades 3-8 to take advantage of Saturday classes offered by the Germanic-American Institute. Scholarships for these courses are available from the GAI. TCGIS is also able to offset or cover the cost of GAI courses as needed, as well as online courses through the Goethe-Institut for interested students.
