About the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Twin Cities German Immersion School (TCGIS), a public charter school and non-profit organization. The Board hires the organization’s Executive Director, provides strategic direction, and monitors school operations and performance to ensure the school fulfills its mission and vision. The Executive Director is an ex-officio non-voting member of the Board who facilitates and collaborates with the work of the Board; the Executive Director is responsible for executing the Board’s directives and to provide leadership to TCGIS.
Board Membership
The all-volunteer Board is composed of TCGIS parents, TCGIS teachers, and community members. The TCGIS Board is a parent-majority board, and composition is consistent with MN statute. Currently as an 11-member board, we have 7 parent members, 2 TCGIS teacher board members and 2 community members. Directors are elected to 3-year terms by the TCGIS teachers, staff, parents, and legal guardians of students. New Directors take an oath of office committing to the moral and legal obligations of the role. TCGIS Board members are honored to serve the TCGIS community in this volunteer capacity.
Leadership Philosophy
In this leadership role at TCGIS, Board members are committed to practicing service leadership, treating everyone with respect and dignity, maintaining integrity through all circumstances, asking how actions reinforce or remove structural inequity, promoting the common good over narrow special interests, being accessible, transparent and accountable, and including voices from communities who will be most impacted by decisions.
JOIN A BOARD COMMITTEE!
SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
You're invited to help the board with its work! Board members chair subcommittees that support the school’s strategic plan. Click here to read descriptions of the subcommittees and click here to see the structure of each committee.
Attend a committee meeting and see how you can contribute. Meeting dates/times are listed in the weekly Rundbrief and also on the TCGIS Public Calendar. To ask questions or offer ideas and feedback in between meetings, please email the committee’s chair.
Board Meeting Information
The board of directors meets in Room 100 at TCGIS, and board meetings will be available for remote viewing via Zoom.
Public comment is encouraged and welcome ahead of the meeting via emails to the board (
[email protected]) or in-person during the open forum near the beginning of board meetings.
Emails to the board are included in the public board packet when received before Monday at noon the week of the regular board meeting.
The recordings of the board meetings will continue to be available on YouTube. The board welcomes guests to join us in Room 100, and are pleased to offer the option for remote real-time viewing. Zoom meeting information can be found in each month's Board packet by clicking on the "Board Documents" button on the page or checking the online TCGIS calendar.

The TCGIS Board is paperless which saves the environment and reduces expenses. The agendas and Board packet are all available on the TCGIS Webpage. Board members use mobile devices to review the files during the meeting.

You may contact the School Board at [email protected]. Currently, the Board email goes to all board members and the Executive Director.

By serving on the School Board, YOU can help our school, strengthen connections within our community, and make important decisions that affect the future. The work of the Board ensures that TCGIS provides a meaningful education and experience for all students. The Board represents the entire TCGIS community, and individuals from traditionally underrepresented groups such as BIPOC, LGBTQ, and families with neurodiversity are especially encouraged to apply.

In early May, the community will elect
3 new directors to the TCGIS School Board. Based on the current board composition and TCGIS bylaws, directors elected through the upcoming election must include at least one community member; each of the other two directors may be a parent, a teacher, or a community member. Directors are  elected to serve a 3 year term that begins in June 2025. We seek any interested persons, especially those with experience in financial compliance, education, board governance, legal matters, management and leadership, and marketing and development. Click here to see more info and how to apply.
